To understand nanotechnology, become familiar with important terms; get an overview of the progress of nanotechnology — from recent discoveries to the possibilities it offers for influencing our future lives; and find websites that provide updates on the latest nano developments. The field of nanotechnology has produced lots of terms. Some describe nanotechnology applications, others are the names of various types of nano-sized materials, and still others describe processes that involve the use of nanotechnology or nanomaterials.
Nanocatalyst : Nanoparticles of a substance, such as platinum, that reduce the temperature at which various chemical reactions occur. Nanocomposite : A matrix to which nanoparticles have been added to improve a particular property of the material, such as strength.
Nano e lectromechanical s ystems NEMS : Devices that integrate nanoscale mechanical and electrical components into a single component. NEMS are generally built on semiconductor wafers using integrated circuit manufacturing techniques. Nanoelectronics : Electronic devices containing components such as sensors or transistors that have features less than nanometers in size. Nanomaterials : Materials with one or more dimensions measuring less than nanometers.
Nanomedicine : The use of nanotechnology for diagnosing, treating, and preventing disease. Nanometer : A measurement equal to 10 -9 meter, or 1 billionth of a meter. Approximately nanometer particles placed side by side would match the width of a human hair. Nanorobot : Robots approximately the size of the cells in our bodies that have a propulsion system, sensors, manipulators, and possibly an on-board computer that can perform tasks on nanoscale objects.
Nanorod : A nanoscale object in which all dimensions are between 1 and nanometers in size with the length typically three to five times the diameter. Nanorods are typically synthesized from metal or semiconducting materials. Nanosensor : Sensors that use nanoscale materials to detect biological or chemical molecules. Nanoshells : Nanoparticles consisting of a gold coating over a silica core. Nanoshells can convert infrared light into heat to destroy cancer cells.
Nanotechnology : The study and use of structures between 1 nanometer and nanometers in size. Nanotube : Molecules composed of carbon atoms arranged on the surface of a cylindrical shape in a pattern of hexagons as seen in buckyballs. When getting used to the command-line, Linux novices are often put off by other, more advanced text editors such as vim and emacs.
While they are excellent programs, they do have a bit of a learning curve. Enter Nano, an easy-to-use text editor that proves itself versatile and simple. Nano is installed by default in Ubuntu and many other Linux distros and works well in conjunction with sudo, which is why we love it so much.
You can run nano in two ways. Nano will follow the path and open that file if it exists. Note that nano does not use the Shift key in shortcuts. You can hit Escape twice instead of holding down the Control key, if you have trouble doing that. There are also some commands that require use of the Meta key. On most keyboard layouts, Meta equates to the Alt button. Nano will politely ask you if you want to save your buffer, and you can cancel this action as well.
Of course, you can always use the Home, End, Page Up, Page Down, and the arrow keys to get around, but that requires moving your fingers from the letters that we all love so much. In other words, you can use those keys instead of the Right, Left, Up, and Down arrows, respectively.
Missing the Home and End keys? Want to move pages at a time instead? When we want to copy text in graphical environment, we highlight it with the cursor. This will mark everything between the starting point up to and NOT including the cursor. Be careful, however, as you can edit text while your marking. This sometimes comes in handy when editing configuration files. You know how in notepad, you can force long lines of text to wrap-around into what look like paragraphs?
The previous search term appears in the square brackets, and leaving the line blank and hitting Enter will repeat that last search. Nano was designed to be similar in look and feel to another program called Pico.
